Unnaviga

February 2021 · Trend forecasting project — Polimoda · Forecast horizon 3–5 years

Unnaviga is a long-term forecasting project developed at Polimoda: a manifesto for a neo-primitive idealism of humanity. To move forward, it suggests, we must go back — to our most natural rhythms, to the senses, to the cycles of nature.

The story unfolds through the metaphor of procreation — Seed, Incubate, Rebirth — and through the figures who still walk to their own rhythm: the artist, indigenous knowledge, Maria Lai, the Benedictine monks and the Basotho herders. Each chapter translates into images, materials and colour.

We have disconnected from our anchors of humanness while within the walls of our body. We have forgotten how to live.

An over cognition of our most natural instincts have left us unable to function. The pace, the pressures, our minds have crippled our flesh and bones. We grow backwards, unlearning how to move, socialise, even love. An age of perfect information has left us mindless. We cannot sense. By placing all conscious thought to the construct of the social body, our mechanical selves are left to decay.

Our societal development has become more of a hindrance than a progression. We spend our days in chaotic isolation. We overwork our bodies for the sake of productivity, all the while sitting, rejecting movement. We document and overshare each routine mundanity but are unable to form real human connections. We eat and cannot taste. We cultivate dissonance.

And so, to go forwards we must hurtle back. We must simply exist once again, without explanation. Our reality re-confined by the distance of what we can tangibly experience. Our knowledge to subsist as far as sight will allow. We must feel the rhythms and cycles of nature. We must live by the guide that is our perfect, animalistic, design. We must thoughtlessly, mindfully, survive and reproduce. We must regress into a state of primordial consciousness.

This manifesto is intended to explore a neo-primitive idealism of humanity. A progression can be found through the metaphor of procreation. In order to reconsider humanity, we must start from the beginning. The most pure and infantile state, the seed. The incubation phase is of nurture, it is here that we can realise ourselves as an integral part of our environment. Finally, we are rebirthed into contemporary society, together. Cultivating connection through collectivism and creating wholeness.

Seed

Attach to nothing, hold no interpretation, be quiet.

Incubate

By simply doing what you are designed to do, you do something large and significant.

Now you must turn attention to yourself. You as a single entity, a part of a whole. You must observe yourself as one, separate, but inextricably bound to your environment.

Your body is ever changing. Your skin is renewed as your cells shed and recreate. Your force is constantly outliving your physical body as you regenerate entirely every few years. In this you are more of a pattern or a process. You are not the same as you were in the past. A rock eroded. You are impermanent, a living rhythm.

You are connected. The iron that ignites your heartbeat was formed by dying stars. Your pulse was made possible by the collision of two galaxies before our universe existed. To inhale is to fill your body with the exhale of grasslands and canopies. Each breath you take is your own, shared with all others, living and past. You are water, guided by the forces of the moon.

Your thoughts are as natural as the composition of your body, adapting and harmonising. Your pattern now must be to wake with the sun, eat when hungry, move, socialise, procreate and sleep with the moon. Your body has perfect intuition, this is your design. Your shadow is not your shadow, but your reflection.

To exist by these cycles is the essence. Sense your alignment to your environment. Reconnect to the inner guide that is your most basic natural instinct.

Rebirth

If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life, you doubt, as far as possible, all things.

The formation of our systems and institutions separate us from our natural propensity to be human. We discard our most natural rhythms, our need for rest and present-ness. Our need for attention and touch.

We look to our roots, the members of society that have not conformed to a contemporary pace. We turn to indigenous knowledge systems, passed down by word of mouth, and the artist as those guides to life’s unforbidden pleasures. The unnaviga of society who walk, listening to their own rhythm. They are not controllable by modern structures. Intuition is their clock and their map.

The artist appeals to our most hedonistic tendencies. A true artist creates only for pure, aesthetic pleasure. They toil to express, for no purpose other than their drive to do so. The perceptions and observations of others have no effect. This must be relearned to dissolve boundaries of ritual suppression.

Indigenous knowledge contains the stone path towards building compassion in community. This resource shows modern society that humans survived through respect for all things. Bounded by resource dependency, living was possible through sharing. Our ancestors used what was available by the land, never depleting. They acted as one, realising that they themselves were the same land they ate from.

The lifeblood is to simply continue.

Homo Faber

They don’t agree in the way we like to live and somewhere we don’t agree in the way they want us to live. I like to feel the earth with my feet, because I was born with no shoes and I’m sure, the modern man wasn’t born with shoes as well. Like some people say I am the first and the last.
